Grealish is a global superstar like Neymar and Mbappe after £100m move – Petrov

Jack Grealish will be compared to global superstars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe following his £100million move to Manchester City, Stiliyan Petrov expects.

England winger Grealish completed his transfer from boyhood club Aston Villa to City this week and could make his debut from the bench in Saturday s Community Shield.

Villa confirmed they had received £100m from City for their captain, triggering a release clause and making Grealish the Premier League s first nine-figure signing.

That is a select group across Europe, including the world s most expensive player Neymar and Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Mbappe.

Jack Grealish has become part of the Neymar 100 million, Mbappe 100 million, [Philippe] Coutinho [group], ex-Villa captain Petrov, one of the…

Sunderland to move for £10 million Everton striker

Roy Keane was dealt a blow earlier this summer when star striker Jones injured his knee in Trinidad Tobago s friendly match against England. The striker had been in impressive form for Sunderland the past season, and Keane wanted him to lead the line for next season, but Jones injury has ruled him out until 2009 at least, according to the Daily Mail.

The same Daily Mail now reports that Keane has lined up a replacement for his crocked striker. The article reckons that Everton s Andy Johnson is in line to join the Black Cats. The former Crystal Palace man has had an impressive debut season for Everton, but failed to confirm in his second year at Goodison Park. Now Moyes has made the striker available as he tries to make room for other players.

According to the report, Jo…

We will fight for Schweinsteiger, says Bayern chairman

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Wednesday he will fight to keep Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger when contract negotiations resume at the end of the month.

The 24-year-old failed to agree terms with Bayern last May and after an impressive Euro 2008 campaign, where Schweini helped Germany reach the final, Rummenigge wants to extend his current deal which runs until June 2009.

We will try hard to keep him, Rummenigge said ahead of Bayern s opening Champions League match in Romania against Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday.

With Franck Ribery occupying Schweinsteiger s preferred left wing berth at Bayern, the German star may have reason to leave Munich, but Rummenigge says he will be at his most persuasive when talks resume next week.

Bale gunning for Champions League glory in Cardiff

Gareth Bale is targeting a Cardiff homecoming in this season s Champions League after Real Madrid learned the initial opponents for the defence of their European crown.

Zinedine Zidane s team will take on Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, Sporting CP and Legia Warsaw in Group F following Thursday s draw in Monaco.

This season s final takes place in the Welsh capital, where Madrid collected the UEFA Super Cup in 2014, following Champions League glory in Bale s first season at the club.

Now, with two European titles under his belt and a run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals with Wales fresh in the memory, the 27-year-old forward is understandably setting his sights high.

It’s obviously a difficult group, it always is in the Champions League. All the teams …

Shearer in at the deep end against Chelsea

Five years ago this month Alan Shearer scored his 173rd goal for Newcastle United as the Magpies defeated Chelsea 2-1 and edged closer to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.

Fast forward to 2009 and a repeat result might just lift the troubled St James Park club to fifth bottom but the club s all-time leading goalscorer must now rely on others to score the goals which matter.

Long since retired as a player, and with eight league fixtures remaining to save Newcastle s top flight status, the former England captain welcomes Chelsea to Tyneside as a rookie manager looking to guide his hometown team to safety.

It would be a tall order for even the most experienced of coaches. Yet, unlike Saturday s opposite number Guus Hiddink, Shearer has no managerial expe…

Ferguson backing United to make European history

Sir Alex Ferguson on Tuesday backed his side to make Champions League history at Rome s Olympic Stadium against Barcelona in Wednesday s final as his team bid to become the first to defend the title.

Not since the Champions League began in 1992 changing its name from the European Cup has any team won back-to-back finals and Sir Alex says his side are more than capable of winning a second successive title.

We have never done it and it has never been done, but we are good at doing things for the first time and this is an opportunity for us, said the 67-year-old United coach.

It is unusual that no one has done it since the Champions League started.

If you look back at teams in the 60s and 70s, sides like Ajax, AC Milan and Bayern Munich regularly won it …

Jones hails Hodgson for West Brom chance

Billy Jones has thanked former West Brom manager Roy Hodgson for turning his Premier League dream into a reality.

Hodgson lured the right-back to The Hawthorns from Preston North End in June 2011, a transfer that followed the Lancashire club s relegation to the third tier of English football at the end of the previous campaign.

From League One to the top flight in an instant, Jones has not looked back and has flourished at West Brom to become a mainstay in the team, playing every minute in the Premier League this season under Steve Clarke, who took charge when Hodgson became England boss in 2012.

Jones has expressed his gratitude to Hodgson for spotting his potential to become an established Premier League player.

Roy was massive for me, Jones told the Birmingha…
